St. Augustine Small Christian Community (SCC)

About our community

St. Augustine Small Christian Community (SCC) is one of the vibrant communities of the Holy Family Minor Basilica. The group was formed between May 2011 and April 2012 by 49 catechumens preparing for the Sacraments of Baptism, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation. It was officially commissioned on Easter Sunday in 2012.

Named after St. Augustine of Hippo, the community draws inspiration from his journey of conversion and his teachings on God’s grace and transformation from sin to holiness. Since its formation, the SCC has grown to a current membership of 78 members who meet every Sunday at 9:30 a.m. at the Cardinal Otunga Annex for prayer, reflection, and fellowship.

“The measure of love is to love without measure.” St. Augustine of Hippo

Structure and Organization

To enhance fellowship and care, St. Augustine SCC operates through the Nyumba Kumi model, consisting of twelve prayer groups named after the Fruits of the Holy Spirit—for example, Joy, Peace, and Kindness.

Each prayer group has about seven members and elects leaders who serve one-year terms (renewable once). These leaders guide new members, mobilize for charity and parish activities, and coordinate prayers and welfare support.

The SCC has a Welfare Office that ensures members’ needs are met through birthday celebrations, support during weddings, welcoming newborns, and comfort in times of sickness or bereavement.

St. Augustine SCC has been guided by the following chaplains over the years:

  • His Lordship Bishop Simon Peter Kamomoe (then Fr. Kamomoe)
  • Fr. Fredrick Chege
  • Fr. David Kinyanjui
  • Current Chaplain: Fr. Michael Ndichu

Their pastoral care has been central to the community’s spiritual formation and stability.
