The association seeks to strengthen faith, promote evangelization, and nurture virtues such as commitment, teamwork, humility, and accountability among women in the Church.
The Catholic Women Association (CWA) is an organization of Catholic laywomen founded in 1980 during Pope John Paul II’s visit to Kenya. Guided by the late Maurice Michael Cardinal Otunga and later by Rev. Fr. David Kamau (now Auxiliary Bishop of Nairobi), the CWA empowers members spiritually, morally, socially, and economically.
CWA draws inspiration from its patron saint, St. Monica, and is supported spiritually by its chaplain, Rev. Fr. Dr. Michael Ndichu.
To bear witness to Christ and to commit to the holistic development of Catholic women and families in the Archdiocese of Nairobi.
To empower members spiritually, fostering stronger faith and evangelization within families and society.
CWA is affiliated with the National Council of Catholic Women and has approximately 70,000 members across 127 parishes, 17 deaneries, and one chaplaincy (Prisons) within the Archdiocese of Nairobi. It plays an active role in pastoral development, gender empowerment, and community welfare.
CWA members serve in ministries focused on prayer, family evangelization, spiritual growth, and community development.
St. Monica
St. Monica is remembered as a woman of unwavering faith, patient endurance, and persistent prayer. She prayed faithfully for her family—especially for the conversion of her son, St. Augustine—and trusted God even in moments of deep struggle. Her life reflects strength, forgiveness, and a love that does not give up.
For Catholic women today, St. Monica stands as a guiding light in prayer, family evangelization, and the quiet courage needed to hold families together in faith.

The Holy Family Minor Basilica (HFMB) Catholic Women Association (CWA) comprises four subgroups that work closely with the Executive Committee to ensure smooth coordination of activities. Their duties and responsibilities are as follows:
Membership is open to baptized Catholic women aged 18 and above. Prospective members undergo a six-month probation period with formation classes before being commissioned.
