The St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus SCC was born from the fusion of two Adult Catechism classes established in 2015 and 2016 at the Holy Family Minor Basilica, following their reception of the Sacraments of Initiation.
Originally, the 2015 group formed St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus SCC, inspired by the saint’s teaching that “roses”—or acts of kindness—are expressions of love and faith. The 2016 group, named John Paul II, drew inspiration from Pope John Paul II’s enduring service to God and humanity.
With shared goals and under the guidance of the Pastoral Team of Holy Family Minor Basilica, the two groups united to form one vibrant Small Christian Community — St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus SCC, under the chaplaincy of Rev. Fr. Simon Ng’ang’a.
The SCC continues to embody the saint’s spirit of humility and love through active participation in parish life, prayer, and charity.
To emulate St. Thérèse’s spirituality of performing small acts of love with great sincerity and compassion.
To foster spiritual growth and encourage members to embody faith, love, and service to God and humanity.
St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, affectionately known as “The Little Flower,” was born on January 2, 1873, in Alençon, France. She entered the Carmelite convent of Lisieux at the young age of 15, driven by her deep desire to serve God in simplicity and love.
Despite living only 24 years, her impact on the Church was profound. Her “Little Way” — performing small acts of love with great devotion — continues to guide countless Christians today.
Her writings, especially “Story of a Soul,” reveal her profound spirituality centered on humility, trust, and love. St. Thérèse was canonized by Pope Pius XI on May 17, 1925, and declared a Doctor of the Church, one of only three women to receive that honor.
She is the patron saint of missionaries, florists, and the sick, and her feast day is celebrated on October 1.
