The Legion of Mary is the Catholic Church’s largest lay apostolic organization, with about 5 million members in over 160 countries. Founded on September 7, 1921, in Dublin, it is governed by the Concilium Legionis, with a structured hierarchy overseeing local praesidia worldwide.
In East and Central Africa, the first Legion of Mary meeting was held at the Holy Family Basilica on December 8, 1936, under the guidance of Venerable Edel Quin. This historic event established the Immaculate Conception Praesidium, which continues its mission in the Edel Quin Hall (formerly the Small Hall). The group’s patron saint is Mother Mary, Mediatrix of All Graces.
To serve as soldiers of Mother Mary, combating darkness and guiding people back to sacramental life.
To inspire and guide individuals, particularly Catholics, into active participation in sacramental life and apostolic service.
The Legion of Mary has positively influenced over a thousand individuals in Nairobi, fostering faith and inspiring conversion. Through apostolic service, it has guided nine non-Catholics into Baptism.
Membership is open to Catholic faithful and Christians of goodwill who wish to deepen their spiritual commitment. With 18 current members, the group invites prospective members to join the weekly meetings every Tuesday at 5:15 p.m. in Edel Quin Hall.
