St. Gregory the Great Choir

About our Choir

Founded in 2012 as the Youth Choir, the group was formally commissioned in 2018 under Auxiliary Bishop Simon Peter Kamomoe and the Holy Family Minor Basilica Youth Board, performing a rich mix of Gregorian chant, traditional hymns, and contemporary sacred music to enhance the liturgy.

The St. Gregory the Great Choir is a Catholic liturgical choir dedicated to enriching the Church’s worship through sacred music. Drawing inspiration from St. Gregory the Great, the father of Gregorian chant, the choir seeks to elevate the hearts and minds of the faithful to God through reverent and beautiful choral music.

To be a model of musical excellence and liturgical integrity, providing a source of inspiration and prayerful reflection through the ministry of song.

Mission

To glorify God and sanctify the faithful through sacred music that inspires worship, unity, and spiritual growth.

Our Objectives

  • Prayerful Excellence: Offer music that uplifts the soul and reflects the beauty of the liturgy.
  • Tradition:Honor the Church’s musical heritage, especially Gregorian chant and sacred polyphony.
  • Community: Serve and grow together in faith as a musical family.
  • Formation:Provide members with ongoing education in vocal technique, liturgical understanding, and the theology of sacred music.

Our Patron Saint

Patron Saint: St. Gregory the Great

St. Gregory the Great (540–604 AD), Pope and Doctor of the Church, is known for his profound influence on Church music and liturgical reform. He is revered as the Father of Gregorian Chant, a musical form that continues to inspire reverence and prayerful worship in the Catholic Church. His legacy reminds us that sacred music is both a form of prayer and a path to holiness.

Choir Prayer Verse:

“The Lord bless you and keep you;
The Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you;
The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.”

Activities

  • Weekly rehearsals and participation in Sunday Mass.
  • Special performances during liturgical seasons such as Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter.
  • Practice Schedule: Thursday: 5:30 p.m.–7:30 p.m. Saturday: 3:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m. Sunday: Two hours before Mass.
  • Annual Christmas chorales, recorded and broadcast on Capuchin TV and KBC, sharing the choir’s musical ministry with a wider audience.

Achievements

  • Secured third place nationally at the Catholic Liturgical Music Association of Kenya (CLIMAK) Music Festivals in 2018.
  • Advanced from Bronze to the Diamond class in CLIMAK competitions.
  • Produced the choir’s first album, “Roho Za Waumini” (Souls of the Faithful).

Join Our Choir

The choir welcomes parishioners of all ages, embracing inclusivity and dedication to excellence in sung liturgy. This openness has fostered steady growth, with approximately 80 active members. The choir is composed of a diverse mix of seasoned choristers, instrumentalists, and young singers, creating a vibrant multi-generational community. Membership in the choir offers opportunities for:

  • Spiritual growth through music, prayer, and service.
  • Fellowship and unity through shared ministry and mutual support.
  • Participation in charitable outreach and social interactions that strengthen community bonds.
  • Faith-enriching experiences such as participating in special liturgical events, including the memorable trip to Zambia for the ordination of Fr. Katuta.
