The Most Rev. Philip A. Anyolo
The Most Rev. Philip A. Anyolo is the Metropolitan Archbishop of Nairobi. His Cathedral is the Holy Family Minor Basilica. Born on 18 May 1956 in Tongaren, Bungoma County, he is the second of ten children. He attended Kakamwe Primary School and later pursued his studies at Mother of Apostles Minor Seminary, St Augustine Major Seminary, and St Thomas Aquinas Seminary, Nairobi.
Ordained a deacon in 1982 and a priest in 1983 by the late Bishop John Njenga, Archbishop Anyolo served as the Bishop’s Secretary in the Diocese of Eldoret before proceeding to Austria, where he obtained a Ph.D. in Systematic Theology. Upon his return, he served as Chaplain and Lecturer in Eldoret.
In 1995, he was appointed the first Bishop of Kericho by Pope Saint John Paul II. He was later appointed Bishop of Homa Bay in 2003 and subsequently Archbishop of Kisumu in 2019. On 28 October 2021, Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of Nairobi, where he was solemnly installed on 20 November 2021, succeeding His Eminence John Cardinal Njue.
